Choosing the right warehouse for your business
Do you need a warehouse?
Has your business out grown your garage? If yes, then you should consider using a warehouse to store and distribute your products. Before going out and looking for a new warehouse partner try considering the things I mention below, it may help you make a better choice.
Things to consider when choosing a warehouse provider
- Do they have adequate volume and space
- Is there enough personnel to handle your volume
- What are the warehouses inventory and control systems
- Is the warehouse clean
- Is the warehouse safe and secure
1. Adequate Volume and Space
When determining the amount of space you may need to store your products its best to first see how many pieces can fit on to a standard pallet (48″x40″). Once you know how many pieces fit on a pallet you can figure out how many pallets you will need stored in the warehouse to hold your products.
Example:
- 100 pieces per pallet
- You have a total of 10,000 pieces
- 10,000 divided by 100 equals 100 Pallets
In the example above you will be required to pay to store up to 100 pallets of product.
2. Is there enough personnel to handle your volume
Once you know there is enough storage space to store you products, you need to make sure the warehouse have enough staff to receive, sort, store, pick and ship out your products. This is best found out by asking the warehouse if they can handle a specific amount of orders in a specific amount of time.
3.What are the warehouses inventory and control systems
Does the warehouse use handheld scanners? Does the warehouse have outdated computers running DOS? Does the warehouse have a label printer? There are some of the questions you need to ask to see what kind of inventory and control system the warehouse has.
4. Is the warehouse clean
A clean warehouse is important for all products especially for food products. Warehouse cleanliness can checked by doing in person inspections a few times per year and your initial visit.
5. Is the warehouse safe and secure
Warehouses with working locks, gates, alarm systems and well maintained are the best place to safely and securely store your products. Warehouses in shady areas may be prime targets for theft.
