Learn to Properly Lift

Proper lifting technique can prevent major injuries in the workplace. Bad lifting habits can deteriorate muscle strength and tissue over the course of time, eventually leading to a back injury.


  • Consider all of the following before attempting to lift something: Mental preparation, Physical preparation and Size
  •  Stretching before a lift 
  • Remove obstacles in your path before you lift
  •  If the weight or size of an object will throw you off balance, you should get help
  • When lifting heavy objects keep them as close to your body as possible


  • Lift something, without testing to see how heavy it is by pushing it with your feet or hands.
  • If you’re picking up something small and light from the floor, it’s okay to simply bend over at the waist and pick it up


  • Lifting a ten pound bag of groceries can put 100 pounds of pressure on your lower back.
  • The risk of injury when reaching above your head is dramatically increased.

  • 1 in 5 injuries in the workplace are related to the back
  • Lifting and carrying an object should always be a last resort.
  • If you twist sideways while holding something heavy, you’re more likely to injure your back
