Types of Cross Docking

There are five types of cross docking, below we describe them all.

Opportunistic Cross docking

  • this method of cross docking requires the precise information about where the items need to be shipped and the amount of items required by the retailer. This eliminates the need for warehousing and storing in turn reducing costs. 

 

Flow-through Cross docking

this type of cross docking consists of constantly moving goods in and out of distribution centers to reduce the chance of spoilage of perishable goods or items that were too difficult to be stored in a warehouse such as boats or other large items.

Distributor Cross docking

This type of cross docking involves the manufacturer of a product being directly delivered to the retail store.

Manufacturing Cross Docking

This type of cross docking, service the manufacturer by acting as a temporary storage to house parts and materials required to produce products by th manufacturer.

Pre-Allocated Cross Docking

This type of cross docking involves having the product already packed, organized, labeled by the manufacturer and already to be shipped without any need of re-palletizing the product or goods.
