  • is there enough lighting to safely? Unload the contents on the container?
  • Are there loose items? Has the load shifted? (what is a shifted load)
  • If the contents are on pallets do you have the right equipment to unload them?
  • Are there heavy loose items on the top layer of items in the shipping container?
  • Before opening the container door did you check for falling boxes?

What to do.

  • Always have a plan for safe container unloading.
  • Do not allow workers inside the container if there is a smell of chemicals or a visible spill. 
  • Typically a forklift should not occupy the same container as other workers.
  • When unloading a container by hand, try to have at least 2 people per container. 
  • Ensure workers who are unpacking containers are trained, supervised and competent.  Use Lumper HQ or other professional lumper services. 
  • Ensure workers wear appropriate PPE including steel toe boots and gloves when unloading a container.
