Ton-Mile and Ton-KM

Ton-mile and ton-km are units used to measure the amount of work done by a transportation system, such as a trucking or shipping company.

Ton-mile is a unit of measurement that represents the transportation of one ton of goods over a distance of one mile. It is calculated by multiplying the weight of the goods being transported in tons by the distance traveled in miles.

For example, if a truck transports 20 tons of goods a distance of 50 miles, the total ton-miles for that shipment would be 1,000 (20 tons x 50 miles = 1,000 ton-miles).

Ton-km is a similar unit of measurement but is used in countries that use the metric system, where distance is measured in kilometers instead of miles. It represents the transportation of one ton of goods over a distance of one kilometer.

To calculate ton-km, you multiply the weight of the goods being transported in tons by the distance traveled in kilometers. For example, if a shipment of goods weighs 30 tons and is transported a distance of 100 kilometers, the total ton-km for that shipment would be 3,000 (30 tons x 100 kilometers = 3,000 ton-km).

Ton-mile and ton-km are important metrics for transportation companies to track as they provide a measure of the work being done by their transportation system. These metrics can be used to analyze the efficiency and productivity of a transportation system and to help identify areas for improvement.
